BREATHE by Abbi Glines

As soon as I read the description of BREATHE, I had to read it. I pictured myself lounging on the beach, devouring the torrid love affair between a down-to-earth Sadie White and Jax Stone, rock star and all around heart throb. The only problem was that I never made it to the beach after Abbi sent me a copy of the novel.

But, I did get to enjoy the love-at-first-sight romance from my very own bathtub. Two nights in a row, I ended up being roused from my candlelit hideaway by my boyfriend who wanted to know if I’d drowned. Each time I emerged, pruney and sullen for having to stop reading long enough to move.

BREATHE by Abbi Glines
A summary from Goodreads:

Sadie White’s summer job isn’t going to be on the beach life-guarding or working at rental booths like most kids her age. With her single mother’s increasing pregnancy and refusal to work, Sadie has to take over her mother’s job as a domestic servant for one of the wealthy summer families on a nearby island.

When the family arrives at their summer getaway, Sadie is surprised to learn that the owner of the house is Jax Stone, one of the hottest teen rockers in the world. If Sadie hadn’t spent her life raising her mother and taking care of the house she might have been normal enough to be excited about working for a rock star.

Even though Sadie isn’t impressed by Jax’s fame, he is drawn to her. Everything about Sadie fascinates Jax but he fights his attraction. Relationship’s never work in his world and as badly as he wants Sadie, he believes she deserves more. By the end of the summer, Jax discovers he can’t breathe without Sadie.

But can their love overcome the disparity in their lifestyles? Or will they have to learn how to without each other breathe again?

Abbi Glines, weaver of romance

My thoughts:

BREATHE is exactly what I expected and wanted, a fun romance novel perfect for the beach or bathtub. The main character, Sadie White, was a beautiful and naive girl with low self-esteem and way too much on her plate. More importantly, she was relate-able and I rooted for her the whole way through.

I liked the way Sadie’s relationship grew with her co-worker, Marcus. He provided an interesting love-triangle I found believable, especially having gone through a similar experience in high school. Sans the rock star of course.

However, I would’ve liked a little more build-up with Sadie and Jax’s romance. I know, I know. It was love at first sight thing, which I actually do believe in, but I wanted Sadie to balk against it a little more. I needed her to force Jax to pursue her a little harder, but I did enjoy watching their love story unfurl. See also my pruney fingers and toes.

If you’re looking for a beach-worthy romance, BREATHE is the book for you. You can purchase it at Amazon.
